Affiliates are always hunting for the best possible sources of traffic. While you can achieve significant profits with PPC and other forms of paid advertising, I prefer to focus on SEO and have recently discovered a useful SEO trick for increasing traffic on sites.
The reason why I focus on SEO is rather simple. Top rankings on Google generate enormous exposure, and organic traffic is more likely to convert than paid. Also, some of my sites are about financial trading, and advertising costs in this industry are some of the highest there are.
Hence, SEO seems like a more viable option. By the way, be sure to check out my previous post about affiliate payouts in the FX industry.
While growing SEO organically can be challenging, I have discovered a simple yet powerful SEO trick that I have tested on one of my sites.
Prerequisites for This SEO Trick
This strategy only works for products and services that have a certain validity period. If you want to promote a page that deals with a generic offer (e.g. “best outdoor equipment”), this tactic most likely won’t work. Ideally, the validity period of the offer should be longer than a few months, but shorter than a year.
My Case Study
I had a site that wasn’t ranking even though I put in quite a bit of effort to optimize it. The site even has an exact match domain: http://forextradingbonus.com. Nevertheless, ranking it was quite difficult.
Then, at some point in September, I was browsing my search console and saw multiple queries for the keyword phrase, “Forex No Deposit Bonus 2015.” Unfortunately, none of those searches was actually landing on my page because I was ranked somewhere between 20th and 30th.
Wait, What Is “Forex No Deposit Bonus”?
In the FX sector, brokers often try to get people into trading by offering accounts preloaded with a small amount of cash, usually anywhere between $15 and $30. It is much easier to get sign-ups this way because everyone wants free money. As you might imagine, with such incentives, the traffic is extensive; on average, there are some 5,500 searches per month.
However, because it’s a gamble for brokers to give away free money for every single sign-up, they usually have such a promo in place only for a few months.
The Idea
I understood that I had no chance of climbing to the top of a Google search for the keyword phrase “Forex No Deposit Bonus” without investing dozens of working hours. I discovered, though, that the competition for “Forex No Deposit Bonus 2015” was significantly lower.
But guess what? There was absolutely no competition for “Forex No Deposit Bonus 2016.” Nobody was looking for that phrase-yet.
Search Volume Trends for “Forex No Deposit Bonus 2016”
So by the end of September, I had already created a page to target the phrase “Forex No Deposit Bonus 2016.” I built a few links to it here and there, updating the content, but there was no traffic coming.
The situation changed drastically in January. While most of the competitors were just starting with their 2016 pages, I had already had mine up and running for a few months. My forethought allowed me to receive a significant number of visitors because this page accounted for over 30% of my search traffic.
The Final Point
Even though this strategy does work, its effect is unlikely to last long. In my case, more powerful sites started to target the same keywords within a month or two, and eventually my page ended up in the middle of the second page of a Google search. Nevertheless, I did get some new traffic for that site that lasts even to this day.
I consider my experiment to be a success, and I am planning to build pages that target the year 2017.
Your Take-Away
No matter what niche you work in, there should definitely be an offer that comes with a certain time restriction and a keyword phrase that people can easily predict. Play around with the search console, find the proper keyword(s), and build a page or two. By doing so, you’ll be able to get ahead of the hundreds of other affiliates in your niche.
